Twelve-year-old June and her mom run a marina on a lake in Vermont. Her life goes topsy turvy when her mother’s girlfriend Eva moves in and MJ and Eva decide to get married. June isn’t sure about Eva and some of the town members aren’t sure about homosexuals, or homosexuals getting married and raising children. June is confronted by the signs for “Take back Vermont” to repeal the law that allows homosexuals to marry, the campaign to avoid businesses of homosexuals and the harassment of other town children. She is further upset when her mother won’t allow her to enter the pie-baking contest because of all the turmoil in town. During the summer June learns who her friends are and how sometimes you need to stand up for your beliefs and your family. While the story told in first-person seems a little too tidy in the end, it provides opportunities for discussion.

Fish wishes he was all kinds of animals until he realizes it is also good to be a fish. Each animal is beautifully illustrated in “digi-wood” using earthy greens and browns on a double-page spread. The few words on each spread uses simple vocabulary in large fonts. There is a repetitive pattern “I wish I were a ... or If I were a ... / I could ...” that makes this an excellent choice for beginner readers.

“Imagine a world with no clock, thermometers or telescopes. A world where everyone believes the earth stands still as the enormous sun travels around it once each day.” The author uses a picture book format to present the biography of Galileo. The colourful paintings and drawings beautifully support the narrative of Galileo’s reflections on his life. We learn of his curiosity, perseverance, use of evidence to support his theories and his drive to share his thoughts with others even when the church declared his studies as heretical. The text is thoughtful and emotional. Although the paragraphs and sentences are shorter for younger readers, its flow makes it good to read aloud. There is supporting material at the back, a chronology to put Galileo’s life in perspective to other world events, lists of his experiments, inventions and improvements, and astronomic discoveries. There is also a glossary, bibliography for students and a map of Italy on the endpapers. This would be suitable even for Grade 6 students Sky Science unit. Grades 2-6.

It’s got the eeeeeeew factor, the slimometer rating sliminess, unpleasantness and how dangerous it is and slime alerts appearing in slime bubbles throughout the book. The cover even has a slimy feel. Each double page spread features a slime produced by a living organism found in water, on land and other slimes. One side has a full page photo of the slime. The other has two or three headings, smaller photos with captions and the slimometer. We find out how the slime is formed, the role of the slime and other tidbits. Words appearing in the glossary are in bold. A great little book to read with a friend. Get ready to be grossed out.

The Halifax Explosion is a remarkable story in Canadian history and is brought to life in this book through great detail about the explosion itself but also how it personally affected five families. Sally M Walker is a respected author of children’s non-fiction. Her sources and acknowledgments give us insight to how carefully and thoughtfully she researched the event and would serve as an example of research, using primary and secondary sources. The black and white illustrations support the text and the family photographs remind us that this tragedy happened to everyday people as they were going about their everyday lives.

In 1975, 57 Vietnamese babies and children were airlifted away from their orphanage in Saigon as the city was being invaded. This book is the true story Tuyet, of one of these children that was on this flight to Ottawa, part of ‘Operation Airlift’. The author describes 8-year-old Tuyet’s life in the orphanage in a city at war and being yanked away from the only life she had ever known and placed on a plane. We know her fear at arriving in Canada, not understanding the language or what her new life will be like. When she goes home with her adoptive parents she believes that she be a helper not part of the family. Her two new sisters help her settle in but there are still misunderstandings. Tuyet is given a room of her very own but what the family didn’t know was that Tuyet had never slept on her own and didn’t know why she was being separated. Skrypuch’s learned Tuyet’s story through many personal interviews, and research of other sources. This is a very personal account of one of the many thousands of Vietnamese that immigrated to Canada.

Stuart Horten is not happy that he and his eccentric if distracted parents move back to his dad’s home town of Beeton, England. During a walk his dad stumbles across the abandoned home of his uncle Tony and informs Stuart that his great-uncle had been a performing magician. At home Stuart examines a tin box that had belonged to Uncle Tony and discovers a false bottom and coins come rolling out. It’s back to the Uncle Tony’s house where he finds a locked safe and the adventure begins. The story is fast-paced with interesting characters. There are puzzles to solve and they need to be solved before the house is demolished. A fast, fun read for the mystery and fantasy readers. The note that appears before the title page will have them hooked, “I have to go away and I may not be able to get back. If I don’t return, then my workshop and all it contains , is yours if you can find it – and if you can find it then you’re the right sort of boy to have it. Affectionately, Your uncle Tony”.
